Presentation – Wire Antennas for HF Operation

by | Mar 31, 2025 | Uncategorized

At our final Friday meeting in March, club members Chas VK3PY and Bert VK3TU delivered a presentation showcasing a variety of wire antennas used for HF operation. This session was particularly helpful for newly licensed amateurs.

Chas gave practical examples of antennas such as centre-fed dipoles and end-fed half wave antennas supplemented by a discussion of the theory of their operation. He also shared a selection of baluns, chokes and transformers necessary to improve their performance. Options for permanent and portable deployment were also presented.

Bert presented details of his recent experiments with a simple implementation of a 20 m / 15 m dual-band ground plane antenna mounted on a 9 m squid pole. This included discussion of construction details, results of modelling the antenna using MMANA-GAL and measurements of the antenna’s performance.

Visitors are always welcome to our meetings, including presentations. Details of forthcoming presentations on Friday evenings can be found on the club’s syllabus page.
