The Geelong Amateur Radio Club operates
two repeaters and some beacons from Mt Anakie, a shared site about
400m above sea level, some 30km north of Geelong. The repeaters both
use the callsign VK3RGL, and are on the 2 meter band, 147.000 out,
146.400 input, and the 70cm band, 439.575 out, 434.575 input, each
has its own coverage map. The beacons are on 144.530 and 432.530Mhz
An additional 2m repeater VK3RGC,
147.125 out and 147.725 in, is newly rebuilt and operating from Montpellior, overlooking Geelong City.
These two coverage maps were generated by, Radio Mobile, a program written by Roger Coudé VE2DBE, in Canada, http://www.cplus.org/rmw/english1.html, also shown in the “Links” list, and driven by an experienced operator, Bert VK3TU, who recently demonstrated it at a GARC meeting.
The expected signal strengths are for a
mobile about 1.5m above ground, if you have a home station with a
higher aerial, then the signal will be stronger.
The inner blue
area is for greater than 20uV signal strength, then the green
is for 2 to 20uV, and the red is for 0.2 to 2.0uV.
These are 20db steps, and actual
experience suggests that the accuracy is quite good.
See how the
high spots, such as the You Yangs (hills) cast a shadow towards the
south east.
We have changed to CTCSS tone access for the VK3RGL 2m repeater, because it shares the channel frequency with VK7RAA at Mt Barrow (1400m) in Tasmania, and VK3RNE at Mt Big Ben (1158m) near Wodonga, and openings to these areas are common. For up to date repeater list, see the WIA site on the links list.
